New England Poetry Club Scholarships

You may be interested in exploring the various New England Poetry Club scholarships contests. If you enjoy writing poetry then you may find this to be very exciting. It can also be a convenient and prestigious way for you to get some funding for your college education. You never know unless you submit your poetry!

Entries can be sent in during the months of April and May annually. They can’t be postmarked before April 1st or postmarked after May 31st to be considered. If you aren’t a member of the club, your entries must be accompanied by a $10 entry fee. This will cover up to 3 poems and if you wish to submit more, it is $3 for each additional poem you submit. No poems can be entered that have won on any level in any other contest.

All poems must be typed and they also need to be labeled to indicate which of the various contests they will be entered into. All entries need to include full name, mailing address, and email address of the applicant.

Daniel Varoujan Award

This scholarship is offered for an unpublished poem in honor of Daniel Varoujan who was killed. Anyone who has won this award in the past can’t enter the contest again. The award is $1,000 and it is sponsored by the Diana Der-Hovanessian Translation Royalties.

Der-Hovanessian Prize

This is one of the unique New England Poetry Club Scholarships offered. It is a prize of $200 for a translation of a poem from any language. The translation has to be sent in along with a copy of the original poem. The award is sponsored by John Mahtesian.

Erika Mumford Prize

This is a prize of $250 awarded for a poem that is delivered in any form. The poem must be about foreign travel or foreign culture. This prize is funded by the family and friends of Erika Mumford in her memory.

Firman Houghton Award

This is a prize of $250 for a lyric poem. Houghton is the former President of NEPC and the institution is the sponsor of the prize money.

Barbara Bradley Award

This prize is for $200 and it is given to an outstanding lyric poem written with less than 21 lines.

Jean Pedrick Chapbook Prize

Any chapbook of poems that has been published in the last 2 years can be used for this award consideration. Two copies of the book must be submitted along with a $5 handling fee if you aren’t a member. The prize awarded is $100.

Sheila Margaret Motton Prize

Any person that has a book of poems which has been published in the last 2 years can qualify. Two copies of the book along with a $5 handling fee for non-members must be submitted. The prize amount is $500.

Students Only New England Poetry Club Scholarships Contests

There are some scholarships and contests that they offer only available to students. These must be postmarked by the last day of April annually to be considered but they can’t be postmarked before the first day of April. Two copies of the poem need to be submitted along with the applicants name, school name, address, and email.

There are three of these poetry contests for money offered, all with a prize of $100. The John Holmes Award is for a student enrolled in a New England college only. The Ruth Berrien Fox Award is offered to students enrolled in any high school of Massachusetts. The Longfellow Prize is offered to students enrolled in elementary or middle school in Massachusetts.

Put your poetry skills to the test and submit your entries for the various New England Poetry Club Scholarships Contests. The entry fees are very low, and if you are NEPC member then you don’t have to pay anything at all. You may decide you want to look into getting such a membership at this time. If you love to write poetry, it could turn out to be a wonderful way for you to make money for school.

*The NEW ENGLAND POETRY CLUB was founded in 1915 by Amy Lowell, Robert Frost and Conrad Aiken. The Club sponsors the oldest poetry reading series in the country.
